We’re encouraged on a daily basis to do our bit for the environment, from recycling to shopping locally and buying reusable products. It’s definitely something we can contribute to in our own way, no matter how small or big.
Sustainable Plus Size Fashion
Buying sustainably and/or ethically in plus size fashion can be quite the challenge. There are fewer options to choose from, but it can be done from fabric options to production methods. It’s definitely something we consider here at Kasbah Clothing – from making items in small production runs, to ensuring our staff are paid a fair, living wage.
What is Recycled Cotton?
Recycled cotton is the process of converting cotton fabric into cotton fibre that can be reused in textile products. Recycled cotton is also referred to as ‘regenerated cotton’ or ‘reclaimed cotton.’ Recycled cotton includes recycled raw material, as well as used, reconditioned, and re-manufactured components.
Textile recycling is generated from two primary sources:
- Pre-consumer: sourced at the production stage and includes scraps created by yarn and fabric by-products
- Post-consumer: sourced after sale and includes garments, upholstery, towels, household items to be repurposed
The largest volume of recycled cotton is sourced at the pre-consumer stage, such as off-cuts and factory waste. Post-consumer waste is more difficult to sort through due to colour shades, fabric blends, and is generally a more labour-intensive process.
